How to install Kodi 18.6 quickly on G-Box Q in 2020
We’ve got some great news for Kodi lovers: The G-Box Q’s last firmware update is optimized for Kodi 18 and newer. This is not shocking since the Q has phenomenal hardware, making this box still more powerful than a lot of new boxes out today, thanks to Matricom’s incredibly efficient firmware. Since the Q can be purchased for around $50 these days, this makes it one of the best choices for a budget-minded and very powerful Kodi streaming device.
Don’t own the G-Box Q? They’re available on eBay!
First thing’s first, you’ll need check your firmware version. If you have a version less than v1.0, then you’ll need to update your firmware first. This is highly unlikely since Matricom has been pushing firmware updates out for years in the background, keeping these devices running in tip-top shape.
To check your firmware, simple go to “All Apps” under the Settings section, then click “Firmware Updater”. On the bottom right side of the screen you’ll see a version number. If your version is “Version 1.0 xxxx” then you’re good to go. If you’re running a Beta version “Version: 0.1 Beta” for example, you’ll need to update by doing “Update Check” and following instructions from there, however it is unlikely that you have a Beta firmware if your Q has ever been connected to the internet.
Once your firmware has been confirmed, we can begin the Kodi installation process.
Step 1 – Open “Browser App”
To open the Browser app, simply click “All Apps” then choose “Browser”. The Browser app is installed on every G-Box Q by default and comes with the basic Android OS.
Step 2 – Download Kodi from Kodi.TV Website
Once you’re in the Browser app, visit “https://kodi.tv/download” URL, then scroll down, select “Android” from the options and then choose the “ARMV7A (32BIT)” Release option. This will download the latest version of Kodi to your G-Box Q. You may receive an error message saying the package is corrupt when you start your download. Just click out of the error message. The package is not corrupt. This happens when downloading apps from the internet browser. After a few seconds you’ll receive an installation window.
Step 3 – Click “Install”
Once you receive the installation notification, go ahead and click “Install”. This will install the latest version of Kodi onto your G-Box Q.
Step 4 – Start Kodi
Once the installation has completed, you’ll notice that the Kodi app is now available from your “All Apps” section. Go ahead and click to start Kodi.
That’s it! You’ve got the latest and greatest Kodi running on your G-Box Q! This method applies to the G-Box Q (first version) device. The procedure is similar to the G-Box Q2 as well, however, the UI interface is a bit different. We’ll make another tutorial on how to install Kodi on the G-Box Q2 next.
For those of you out there that don’t own the G-Box Q, they can be found for around $50! These devices were rather pricey when they were released ($109) so the price has come down a lot since then. One thing that hasn’t changed: The G-Box Q is still our favorite Android TV Box of ALL TIME. Matricom is well-known for producing one of the most reliable Android boxes on the market. We’ve heard stories of people still using the original G-Box Midnight even in 2020. The original Midnight is over 10 years old and people are still happily using it. That’s pretty incredible!
